How the Champions League league phase works in 2026/27

How the Champions League league phase works: 36 clubs, 8 games each, one table, and who goes to the round of 16, the play-offs or out.

Published

The Champions League league phase puts 36 clubs into one table, and every club plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. After the last matchday the top eight go straight to the round of 16, clubs ranked 9th to 24th play a two-legged knockout phase play-off, and everyone from 25th down is out of European competition for the season. This guide has the Champions League league phase explained for 2026/27, the third season of the format.

The league phase explained in one minute

  • 36 clubs, one table. The UEFA Champions League dropped its old group stage in 2024/25. Back then 32 clubs were split into eight groups of four. Now all 36 are ranked together.
  • Eight matches each. Every game is a single match, so there are 144 matches across eight matchdays.
  • Three points for a win, one for a draw, none for a defeat.
  • Top 8: straight to the round of 16.
  • 9th to 24th: knockout phase play-offs over two legs.
  • 25th to 36th: eliminated, with no drop into the Europa League.

The league phase ends on 27 January 2027. The knockout rounds then run through to the final in Madrid on Saturday 5 June 2027.

How opponents are drawn

The 36 clubs are placed in four pots of nine according to club coefficient, with the Champions League titleholder the top seed in pot 1. Each club is then drawn against two opponents from every pot, playing one of the two at home and the other away. That is how a team ends up with four home games and four away games.

Two restrictions apply in principle: clubs from the same national association cannot be drawn together, and a club cannot face more than two clubs from any other single association.

Because nobody plays everyone, schedules differ from club to club. The 2026/27 draw, held in Monaco on 27 August 2026, gave Manchester City home games against Paris Saint-Germain, Sporting CP, Napoli and AEK Athens, and away trips to Barcelona, Porto, Leipzig and Lens. Real Madrid host Inter, PSV, Leipzig and LASK, and travel to Arsenal, Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk and AEK Athens.

The single table and the tie-breakers

All 36 clubs sit in one ranking, so a point against any opponent counts the same. When clubs finish level on points, UEFA applies these criteria in order:

  1. Goal difference in the league phase
  2. Goals scored
  3. Away goals scored
  4. Number of wins
  5. Number of away wins
  6. Points collected by the club's league phase opponents
  7. Goal difference of those opponents
  8. Goals scored by those opponents
  9. Disciplinary points from yellow and red cards
  10. Club coefficient

During matchdays one to seven only the first five criteria are used, and clubs still level are listed alphabetically. UEFA also publishes a full explanation of how teams level on points are separated.

What each position means

Final league phase positionWhat happens next
1st to 8thQualify directly for the round of 16
9th to 24thPlay the knockout phase play-offs (two legs)
25th to 36thEliminated; no place in the Europa League or any other competition

The gap between 8th and 9th is the big one. Finishing in the top eight means skipping the play-offs and two extra matches in February.

Knockout play-offs, seeding and the bracket

The play-offs pair the clubs ranked 9th to 16th, who are seeded, with the unseeded clubs ranked 17th to 24th. The pairings are fixed by league position: 9th or 10th meet 23rd or 24th, 11th or 12th meet 21st or 22nd, 13th or 14th meet 19th or 20th, and 15th or 16th meet 17th or 18th. In principle the seeded club plays the second leg at home.

The eight winners join the top eight in the round of 16. The top eight are seeded in pairs (1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and so on), and each pair is drawn into one of two bracket positions against a play-off winner. The bracket is then set in advance. If a seeded club goes out, the team that beats it takes over its place in the bracket path.

Every knockout tie except the final is played over two legs. The club with the higher aggregate goes through. If the aggregate is level, the second leg moves into two 15-minute periods of extra time and then, if needed, a penalty shoot-out. The final is a single match at a neutral stadium.

Why the league phase brings big games earlier

In the old group phase, clubs played the other three teams in their group twice, which produced 48 different match-ups in total. The league phase produces 144 unique matches. That is why heavyweight fixtures that once needed a knockout draw now appear in the autumn.

This season's examples are already on Footballzzz: Manchester City vs PSG full match replay, AS Roma vs Real Madrid full match replay and Real Madrid vs Inter Milan full match replay. With one table deciding who skips the play-offs, even a game between clubs from the middle of the pack can matter by January.

Frequently asked questions

How many games does each team play in the Champions League league phase?

Each club plays eight league phase matches against eight different opponents: four at home and four away. With 36 clubs that makes 144 matches over eight matchdays, which run from 8 September 2026 to 27 January 2027 this season. Nobody plays a ninth game in the league phase.

Do teams play each other twice in the Champions League league phase?

No. Every league phase tie is a single match, and a club never meets the same opponent twice. Each team is drawn against two clubs from each of four seeding pots, one at home and one away, so you face eight of the other 35 clubs, not all of them.

What happens to teams that finish 9th to 24th in the league phase?

They enter the knockout phase play-offs, played over two legs in February 2027. Teams ranked 9th to 16th are seeded and face an unseeded side from 17th to 24th, with the seeded club hosting the second leg in principle. The eight winners join the top eight in the round of 16.

Do teams knocked out in the league phase drop into the Europa League?

No. Clubs that finish 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition for the season, with no access to the Europa League or the Conference League. Dropping into another competition only happens in the qualifying rounds, not after the league phase.

How are teams level on points separated in the league phase?

UEFA ranks them first by goal difference, then goals scored, away goals scored, wins and away wins. Further tie-breakers use the results of their opponents, then disciplinary points and finally club coefficient. Before the last matchday only the first five criteria apply, and any remaining ties go alphabetically.
